this is not a typo of making the mustaches ridiculously big...
I'm simply trying to emphasis HOW MUCH I LOVE THIS SERIES!!!!
Source: Purchased (again....I really need to do a book ban for a bit. Kindle one-click's are horrible!! in a feed my addiction kind of way *sigh*)
Publication Dates: 2009- now (and beyond...still two more in the series!)
Short Synopsis (Goodreads): (for first in the series, Rosemary and Rue) October "Toby" Daye, a changeling who is half human and half fae, has been an outsider from birth. After getting burned by both sides of her heritage, Toby has denied the Faerie world, retreating to a "normal" life. Unfortunately for her, the Faerie world has other ideas...
The murder of Countess Evening Winterrose pulls Toby back into the fae world. Unable to resist Evening-s dying curse, which binds her to investigate, Toby must resume her former position as knight errant and renew old alliances. As she steps back into fae society, dealing with a cast of characters not entirely good or evil, she realizes that more than her own life will be forfeited if she cannot find Evening's killer.
My Review: (for your ease and convenience I have bolded the important bits of this review as I want you to understand how awesome it really is at a glance so you can add it to your TBR pile Right. Now.)
Guys and gals, I finally found it....and I know those of you who are fans of urban fantasy and paranormal kick-butt and romance have been looking for it too....ANOTHER SERIES LIKE MERCY THOMPSON!!
Seriously!! It's just too perfect! I doubt Ms. McGuire fashioned her world and heroine after Patricia Briggs Mercy Thompson....but this series is as similar to a book as you can get without being the exact thing...as a matter of fact, being almost the opposite!
I hope I'm explaining myself so you can understand....it's kind of hard because I really, really like this series and hope that you will give it a shot as well.
Instead of a series being focused on shape shifters, this one is on the Fae (or however you want to spell it). And may I just say that I have never felt more sympathetic towards the fae and their world has never been more easier to understand than when reading this series. I know that the fae are always painted as being bloodthirsty (um...k, there is quite a bit of blood and killing...but when is there not?), taciturn (yeah, you have some of that too here), and perpetually changing their minds (ok ok, this series has that too....but if they didn't do this type of stuff they would cease to be faye!) BUT we see what it's like to deal with the fae from a fae's perspective.
It's not going to be all lollipops and rainbows, even for their own kind (maybe especially), and in fact there is quite a bit of murder and mayhem that goes on (but then Toby Daye is a detective/PI type) but there are real friendships, real triumphs and growth, and real romantic tension. These are the exact things that I love so much about the Mercy Thompson books!
Toby Daye is amazingly relatable, she's a changeling (half far half human) and is constantly being pushed around by those that thing they are stronger than her...but they have nothing on Toby's tenacity and she will win with a broken arm, a bloody nose, and a burning car and even if it takes her a decade to solve it. She's not perfect, but she tries and it was so enjoyable and engrossing to read about her.
And it's not just all about Toby! What some of my favorite series have (*coughMercyThomsponcough*) are a strong supporting cast of characters that honestly could have books written about themselves and who add so much depth and color (and romantic tension and adorableness galore!) to the world that the author has created. And wow what a world! It's so easy to understand and to believe that it's real. Not overly complex and fantastical enough that you're able to escape from the mundane for at least a few hours.
Seriously guys, if I haven't convinced you to try this series...I'm an epic failure as a blogger and friend...but at the very least I'm so glad chance (honestly...it was just a random click on amazon that brought this series into my life) lead me to another series loose myself in. LOVED IT!!! (and really can't wait for what comes next!!!!)
that is all.
